add a comment
Basic step and direction drives for powering step motors abound in the marketplace, and it takes dedication to set our drives apart from the pack. We do this by developing innovative control solutions that make step motors perform better (faster, quieter, smoother, more accurately, and with more torque), without breaking the budget. We also differentiate our product line by offering drives that are smarter than basic drives. This article touches on a smarter class of step motor drives, including the popular ST5-S stepper drive, that can be controlled by higher level streaming commands.
Basic Step Motor Drives
Step and direction drives are the perfect choice for many applications because readily available machine controllers – like PLCs, motion controllers, indexers, and PCs – can generate the digital step (pulse) and direction signals necessary to control the motion of the motor. However, care must be taken to select a controller with a digital output specification of 2 MHz or higher if using microstepping, and depending on the controller selected, generating the code to create the motion profiles can be time consuming.
Beyond Basic Drives
For many other applications, a drive that can accept higher level commands via a permanent serial connection – such as RS-232, RS-485 or Ethernet – provides another option for system designers who prefer not to mess with coding up the motion profiles and would prefer instead to rely on the smart step motor drive to generate the profiles internally. In this scenario the designer provides high level commands to the drive that describe the parameters of the motion profile, i.e. acceleration, deceleration, constant velocity, and distance or position, and the drive takes care of generating the necessary pulses and controlling the motion of the step motor. This approach, commonly referred to as “streaming commands”, frees up programming time, reduces discrete I/O count, and potentially alleviates a lot of headaches.
Sample Higher Level Command Sequence
Below is a typical sequence of higher level commands for an Applied Motion drive. This sequence includes one command for each parameter of the motion profile: acceleration rate, deceleration rate, velocity, and distance traveled. At the end of the sequence a single command initiates the defined motion from the motor.
AC100 Set acceleration rate to 100 rev/sec/sec
DE100 Set deceleration rate to 100 rev/sec/sec
VE5.5 Set motor velocity to 5.5 rev/sec
DI10000 Set move distance to 10,000 steps
FL Initiate an incremental positioning movement (AKA Feed to Length)
The ST5-S Stepper Drive
The ST5-S stepper drive is a prime example of a smart step motor drive that provides this higher level capability via streaming commands. The ST5-S provides up to 5.0 amps/phase to drive 2-phase step motors from the small size NEMA 11 up to the large size NEMA 34. It has an attractive list price and is ready to ship from our warehouse in California.
For applications requiring more torque with bigger motors check out the ST10-S stepper drive.

SWM integrated steppers, from Applied Motion Products of Watsonville, CA, are IP65 rated drive+motor units, fusing step motor and drive components into a single splashproof and dustproof device. This space-saving design eliminates wiring and saves on cost over conventional motor and drive solutions.
The SWM24 integrated steppers combine high torque NEMA 24 step motors with a sophisticated, 6.0 A/phase (peak-of-sine) step motor drive. Power to the drive, located at the rear of the motor, must be supplied by an external DC supply. Applied Motion offers compatible 24 and 48 volt DC power supplies for exactly this purpose.
All SWM24 integrated steppers are RoHS and CE compliant.
Control Options:
The SWM24 integrated steppers come with the choice of three control options: S, Q, and C.
- The “S” control option means the drive can operate in the following control modes: step (pulse) & direction, velocity (oscillator), and streaming serial commands (SCL). (SWM24 integrated steppers do not support stored-program operation with the Applied Motion 4-axis and 8-axis SiNet Hubs).
- The “Q” control option means the drive can operate in all of the same control modes as the S option, plus the ability to run a Q program stored in non-volatile memory. Q programs are created using Applied Motion’s Q Programmer™ software, which provides powerful commands for motion, I/O, conditional processing, multi-tasking, math functions, and more.
- The “IP” control option means the drive is designed to operate on a Rockwell PLC-based EtherNet/IP communication network.
All SWM24 integrated steppers, whether they come with the S, Q, or IP control option, are setup and configured using Applied Motion’s ST Configurator™ software.
Encoder Option:
1000-line (4000 count/rev) incremental encoders are included in all SWM24 models. The encoder is housed inside the same enclosure as the drive electronics, providing protection from dust, liquid and debris. The addition of the encoder means the stepper can perform special functions not available otherwise. Stall Detection notifies the system as soon as the required torque is too great for the motor, which results in a loss of synchronization between the rotor and stator, also known as stalling. Stall Prevention actually prevents stalling of the step motor by dynamically adjusting motor speed to maintain synchronization of the rotor to the stator. This unique feature allows step motors to operate in a much broader range of applications than previously available to step motors, such as torque-control applications. The Stall Prevention feature also performs static position maintenance, which maintains the position of the motor shaft when at rest.
Inputs/Outputs:
The RS-232 based SWM24SF and SWM24QF model numbers come with 4 digital I/O points, called Flex I/O points, because each point can be individually defined as an input or an output. As inputs, the Flex I/O points accept signals of 5-24 VDC and can be used for connecting pulse & direction signals, end-of-travel limit switches, jog switches, quadrature encoder signals, PLC outputs, sensors, or many other signal types. When defined as digital outputs, the Flex I/O points can be connected to PLC inputs, counters, lights, relays, or other devices.
The Ethernet-based SWM24S, SWM24Q and SWM24IP models come with 3 digital inputs and 1 digital output. The digital inputs accept signals of 5-24 VDC and can be used for connecting end-of-travel limit switches, jog switches, quadrature encoder signals, PLC outputs, sensors, or many other signal types. The digital output can be connected to PLC inputs, counters, lights, relays, or other devices.
All SWM24 model numbers come with 1 analog input. The analog input accepts 0-5 VDC signals and can be used for velocity and position control.
Communication Ports:
SWM24 integrated steppers with the S and Q control options are available with either RS-232 or Ethernet ports for programming and serial communications. For single-axis applications where no serial networking is required the RS-232 option is recommended. RS-232 version also supports Modbus/RTU communication. For applications where communications over a network are required the Ethernet option is recommended.

Whether you are new to our products or a long-time Applied Motion Products user, we think you may be interested in what we have been working on recently. Why? Because these products and features can make your life easier by shortening the time it takes to complete your motion control project, while also reducing complexity, cost, and component count.
Perhaps you saw our feature article last month regarding our newly supported communication protocol, Modbus RTU: Dial “M” for Modbus. Maybe you have heard about our NEMA 24 integrated steppers (STM24 and SWM24), which combine the advanced features of our microstepping drive and controller into a single device with a NEMA 23 motor mount.
In case you missed it, Modbus RTU is Applied Motion Products’ newest fieldbus protocol, which is now available on the following integrated stepper products:
• STM24QF-3AE
• STM24QF-3AN
• STM24QF-3RE
• STM24QF-3RN
• SWM24QF-3AE
Modbus RTU operates on a serial link, and is optimized for use on RS-485. It operates on the principle of registers, which can be used to monitor the drive’s behavior, send data to and from the drive, and execute commands. It is uniquely suited to PLC applications since PLCs use a similar memory model by design. As such the Modbus RTU protocol is typically already integrated into most PLC and HMI platforms as a generic driver.
Take a look at our Application Notes for Modbus RTU that are available for download from our website. The engineers at Applied Motion Products have already done the hard work for you by preparing and documenting these easy-to-use examples:
• APPN0027A Modbus/RTU from Automation Direct PLC
• APPN0029 Modbus/RTU from Proface HMI
• APPN0030 Modbus/RTU from Beijer Electronics HMI

Many communication standards have been applied to machine and motion control with varying degrees of success. Some of the more popular are EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, CANopen, DeviceNet and Profibus. EtherNet/IP has become particularly popular because it is compatible with Rockwell/Allen Bradley PLCs, runs on standard Ethernet hardware, and employs the robust and proven Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) for communication, control and data gathering.

EtherNet/IP Compatible Stepper Drives
Applied Motion Products is pleased to announce the availability of eight new EtherNet/IP compatible step motor drives. In addition to controlling a wide range of high torque step motors, these units have plentiful, industrial strength I/O and support more than 100 commands and 130 registers over the EtherNet/IP protocol with a communication speed of 100 Mbits/second.
In addition to point to point moves, homing, jogging, registration and encoder following, I/O commands and real time polling are fully supported. Q programs can also be stored in the drive and triggered via EtherNet/IP, allowing the drive to execute complex, intelligent command sequences.
We offer four DC powered EtherNet/IP drives. The ST5-IP-EN and ST10-IP-EN can control step motors ranging from NEMA sizes 11 to 34, producing up to 1200 oz-in of dynamic torque. Need encoder feedback? The ST5-IP-EE and ST10-IP-EE models include an encoder feedback option that can detect and prevent motor stalls using Applied Motion’s proprietary stall prevention algorithm.
If you prefer an AC powered unit, the STAC5 is available in 120VAC (STAC5-IP-N120) and 220VAC (STAC5-IP-N220) models that efficiently drive our specially designed, high torque NEMA 23 and 34 motors. The STAC5-IP-E120 and STAC5-IP-E220 support encoder feedback with stall detection and stall prevention.
Both DC and AC powered drives include our auto-tuned digital current control, which provides smooth, quiet motion. An advanced anti-resonance algorithm with electronic damping allows for maximum torque utilization, rapid acceleration, and fast settling times.
All of our EtherNet/IP drives are CE certified and ROHS compliant. AC powered models are UL recognized.
