Did You Know? Synchronized Motion Using Encoder Following September 2, 2013

Encoder following, which is also known as A/B Quadrature control mode, can be utilized on stepper and servo drives sold by Applied Motion Products.  An encoder is a feedback device most commonly found in servo systems where positional feedback is essential for closed-loop control. Incremental encoders are standard on all servo motors sold by Applied Motion and they may also be ordered pre-installed on our stepper motors and integrated steppers for use with our stall prevention and stall detection features.

But did you know that an encoder can also act as an input signal to control and synchronize the motion of two or more motors?

Because the output from an encoder is a series of pulses, consisting of an A and B channel, these signals are very similar to the Step Pulse & Direction outputs that are commonly found on a PLC or indexer. With a few simple configuration steps, an Applied Motion stepper drive or servo drive can be configured to accept these encoder pulses as a command source.

In motion control applications such as high speed insertion, line speed matching, adhesives application and labeling (all of which require one axis to be synchronized to another), this configuration can not only be very useful, but quite easy to set up and manage.  In those applications that require the secondary following axis to go faster or slower than the primary axis, the “Electronic Gearing” ratio can be manipulated to achieve this.

When configuring a stepper drive, the ST Configurator™ software is used to select A/B Quadrature as the signal type. When configuring a servo drive, Quick Tuner™ is used to make this selection. In both cases, the Electronic Gearing parameter (defined in units of steps per revolution), can be defined such that the motor following the encoder will run faster, slower, or at the same speed as the encoder itself. To illustrate this concept, picture a large machine equipped with a hand wheel connected to an encoder, which has been wired to a drive configured for encoder following. As the machine operator turns the hand wheel, the corresponding machine axis can be positioned at the desired rate of speed.

In more sophisticated control systems that require encoder following to be switched on only at specific times during the process, our Serial Command Language (SCL) can be used to issue commands to the drive to accomplish this.  This feature allows the system designer to synchronize, on demand, two or more axes of motion.

The FE (Follow Encoder) serial command can be issued to switch on encoder following while a drive is running in any other control mode.

Other SCL commands related to FE are:

  • EG – Electronic Gearing (sets ratio for following motor)
  • AC – Acceleration (controlled upon initiation of FE)
  • DE – Deceleration (controlled when FE is turned off)
  • DI – Distance (defined deceleration distance)

STM23 with Ethernet and EtherNet/IP

The new STM23 models fuse a high performance motion controller with 100 MBit Ethernet communications to a high torque NEMA23 step motor.  Connecting to an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix or MicroLogix PLC?  EtherNet/IP is also available. 

The STM23Q-2Ex provides 125 ounce inches of torque, while the longer STM23Q-3Ex produces 210 ounce inches.  Both models are available with an optional 4000 count/rev optical encoder, safely housed inside, that can detect and prevent motor stalls using Applied Motion’s proprietary stall prevention algorithm.  Our auto tuned digital current control provides smooth, quiet motion, while an advanced anti-resonance algorithm with electronic damping allows for maximum torque utilization, rapid acceleration, and fast settling times.

Software applications can communicate with the STM23 in real time, using the SCL and Q languages over standard 100 megabit Ethernet cabling, addressing and protocols.  Ethernet can transmit data at 100 times the speed of CANopen and more than 1000 times faster than RS-232 and RS-485.  The number and types of devices that can share a network are practically unlimited.

Even if you are just programming a Q drive for standalone operation, the Ethernet option can be more convenient than chasing down a USB-serial converter and trying to remember which COM port it uses.  Just plug the drive into your office network, install our free, easy to use software, and you’re ready for programming and configuration.

Applied Motion Products is proud to announce the release of our new line of brushless DC motor drives. The BD5 is a brushless DC motor drive that is based on advanced control technology featuring excellent performance and ease of use.  The drive is aimed at OEM applications that require high performance, high speed stability, basic speed control and low cost. Its velocity modes are controlled by way of analog or multispeed digital inputs.  The supply voltage for the drive is 12 to 48 VDC (PS150A24 power supply recommended) with an operating current of 5 amps RMS continuous and a peak current of 10 amps RMS.

To compliment the BD5 drives, Applied Motion Products is offering three performance matched 42mm brushless DC motors.  Maximum speed is 4500 rpm.  Max continuous torque is 0.225 N-m (32 ounce-inches).

To aid in drive/motor placement, Applied Motion Product is offering two extension cables: a 1 meter cable, part number 3004-272-1M, and a three meter cable, part number 3004-272-3M.

Closed loop control has been a very popular option on the STAC5 drives and recently we’ve added to its functionality. Previously the dynamic “stall prevention” feature was only available via stored programs or streaming commands, but now by popular demand this feature is accessible in step and direction mode and encoder following mode. Ease of use is always high on the lists. To that end, the STAC5 family is the beneficiary of our new fully integrated ST Configurator™ software. The ST Configurator software makes setting up, configuring and programming STAC5 drives a snap. STR2 Microstepping Drive from Applied Motion Products

The STR2 stepper drive is an ultra compact, digital step & direction drive, great for OEM applications requiring basic step & direction control of a 2-phase step motor. The STR2 outputs up to 2.2 A/phase to the step motor, and is compatible with a variety of 2-phase step motors that have been selected to optimize performance of both the drive and motor.

The STR2 drive features advanced microstepping performance and sophisticated current control with anti-resonance. Anti-resonance electronically damps motor and system resonances, which improves motor smoothness and torque over a wide speed range.

Each STR2 step motor drive operates in either Step & Direction or Pulse/Pulse control mode. Selecting between these two modes is done by moving a jumper located under the cover of the drive. Each STR2 drive can microstep up to 20,000 steps/rev with a 1.8º step motor (1/100 step), and can even microstep the step motor when the command pulses are low resolution. This feature is called Microstep Emulation. All drive setup is done via dip switches on the side of the drive, including motor selection, running current, idle current, and step resolution.
