POSITAL has launched a new line of incremental rotary encoders for the motion control and industrial automation markets. These devices are programmable, which means that performance characteristics such as resolution (number of pulses per turn) and incremental pulse direction (A before B or B before A) can be modified by simply changing firmware parameters. The characteristics of the output driver can similarly be set to either Push-Pull (HTL) or RS422 (TTL).
The new incremental encoders are based on magnetic measurement technology and are compact, rugged and highly resistant to shock and vibration loadings. Resolution can be set anywhere in the range of 1 to 16,384 pulses per turn. They are also available with high performance seals that make them suitable for use in the most extreme environmental conditions.

While the 2015 International CES and its exhibitors may think they own the Internet of Things (IoT) based on the recent fanfare, factory automation is among the many areas besides consumer electronics that is poised to benefit from the connectivity provided by the IoT (CES coverage on pages 4, 12 and 13). In fact, for factories other commonly used terms include smart factories, smart production, Industry 4.0, cyber physical systems (CPS) and more.
Smarter factories mean increased automation with highly-connected intelligent production systems and processes. In the factory environment, the connectivity to the Cloud (the cyber system) from the physical system in the factory can be wireless or wired. Many industrial IoT applications start with wireless sensing monitoring and controlling production processes and providing that data to other locations within the company or by obtaining input from internal or external sources to improve the automation process…

POSITAL has introduced new models of its versatile IXARC magnetic encoders that combine incremental and absolute rotation measurement capabilities in a single, compact and highly robust package. Absolute encoders provide a control system with an accurate report of the rotational angle and rotation-count at a specific point in time, which makes them ideal for many machinery positioning tasks.
Incremental encoders provide a signal pulse each time the encoder shaft rotates by a specified angle. Their excellent dynamic response makes them a good choice for monitoring rotational speed and direction. “Combining both measurement capabilities in a single device provides control system designers with extra flexibility,” underlines POSITAL product manager Chintan Doshi. “Moreover, the incremental signal can be used as a ‘heartbeat’ that confirms that the sensor is functioning normally.” Because the new IXARC hybrid encoders are based on POSITAL’s high-performance magnetic measurement technology, they offer a unique combination of accuracy, shock/dust/moisture resistance and compact size.
IXARC hybrid incremental + absolute rotary encoders have communications interfaces that support both measurement modes: RS 422, HTL or TTL for incremental readings and SSI for absolute measurements. Available multi-turn versions can count up to 64,000 revolutions while incremental measurements have resolutions as high as 16,384 pulses per revolution.
Like other POSITAL sensors, the new IXARC hybrid incremental + absolute encoders are available with multiple options for housing size and materials, flange configuration, shaft type and diameter, connection/wiring type and level of environmental protection – up to IP67. POSITAL’s online product finder tool – available at www.posital.com – helps users to quickly and efficiently identify products that will meet their specific requirements.

The POSITAL Advantage: Modularity and Mass-Customization
Until now, users of position and motion sensors have had to choose between low-cost standardized products and more expensive custom-built items. For cost-sensitive applications, sensor builders have adopted mass production techniques, building large runs of identical products. The rotation sensors used in automotive ABS and stability control systems are good examples of high-volume, mass produced items. For more demanding customers – such as machine builders creating complex industrial automation and motion control systems – sensor manufacturers have often relied on a more craft-based approach, with expert machinists building custom-designed products in in small batch quantities. These specialized items are more expensive than their mass-produced counterparts and usually take far longer to be delivered. However, for the specialist machine builder, getting instruments that meet their exact requirements can often be more cost-effective than adapting a not-quite-right unit.
POSITAL has broken down the “inexpensive but inflexible” vs. “customized but costly” divide by developing a new mass-customized approach to sensor design and fabrication. This approach centers on a highly modular device architecture. Sensing elements, controlling microprocessors, housings, communications interfaces, mounting hardware etc. are all designed to be – as far as possible – interchangeable modules. Thus, for example, if the buyer of a rotary encoder requires a POSITAL IXARC multi-turn magnetic encoder with a stainless-steel housing, IP67-rated seals, a 10 mm solid shaft and a CANopen communications interface, the technician responsible for assembling the device can simply select the appropriate sub-components from inventory and put them together. This approach means that FRABA can offer an extremely large number of possible variations on their basic sensor designs – over 135,000 models currently! Moreover, special configurations can be built and delivered quickly – usually within a few days of receiving an order.
FRABA’s modular approach to sensor fabrication is supported by a highly computerized manufacturing control system. Assembly technicians are provided with step-by-step instructions that guide them through the assembly process. (These instructions are in graphical form, which avoids communications problems with a multi-lingual workforce.) The production control system also tracks each item from the time an order is received, recording information about construction, QA testing, calibration and shipping.
